Job Description Position Summary The medical scribe is to assist the physician by accurately documenting the physician’s encounter with the patient as they are being performed. Anticipate physician needs to facilitate the flow of the clinic practice. Support the physician with other department specific duties. Education and Work Experience 1. High School Diploma or GED required 2. RMA, CMA, or LPN degree preferred 3. One to two years of experience in the health care field Knowledge and Skills 1. Prior knowledge of health care vocabulary and processes. 2. Effective oral and written communication skills. 3. Excellent interpersonal skills. 4. Computer literacy. 5. Ability to organize and prioritize work. 6. Self-directed work ethic. 7. Detail-oriented. 8. Dependable. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Accompany physician into the patient examination room in order to transcribe a history and physical exam, and document accurately the physician’s encounter with the patient. 2. List all proper diagnosis and symptoms as well as follow up instructions and set up prescriptions as dictated by the physician. 3. Input patient orders including laboratory tests, radiology tests, referrals, etc. 4. Document any procedures performed by the physician. 5. Assist physician by completing all documentation in the electronic medical record. 6. Assisting in maintaining an updated medical record. 7. Document discussions with the family and patient. 8. Monitor and organize tasks for the physician to ensure timely completion, and follow up is communicated to the patient regarding their care. 9. Assist in the coordination of consults and referrals. 10. Prepare the next day’s schedule by ensure the needed information is available in the EHR. 11. Monitor outstanding orders for the physician. 12. Monitor the encounter forms so they reflect the accurate charges. 13. If applicable, assist in the preparation of a patient’s paperwork and scheduling for procedures, surgeries, etc. 14. Assist in patient call backs. 15. Contribute to a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a positive manner with all customers, including patients, clients, co-workers, and management. 16. Other duties as assigned.
